NYC Artists, Make Some NOOOIISE

I met Stoni at an event hosted by another NYC artist [@Mingonyc] where she was collaborating on an art piece. I've personally never been to a party where some people are dancing, some are smoking, some are drawing. The vibes the whole night were refreshing and uncontaminated. Unlike the events hosted by these party promoters, (no shade) everyone was genuine, welcoming and not to mention, knew GOOD music! Stoni and i immediately took off with conversation and i was intrigued with her aura. Not only is she a talented painter & artistic model, shes a go-getter. At only 19 years old, everyday, Stoni takes on the streets of NYC to network, and do what she loves. Her vibe was pure and an inspiration to be around so i thought id share her with you all. “I’ve always admired paint”

Where are you from?

“I was born in Guyana, and I moved to Washington Heights when I was 4. I went back for the first time in 2016, it was nice.”

What kind of music do you listen to?

“I listen to mostly rock and reggae. Really anything with a good beat and instruments. If I’m listening to anything slow, the vocals really need to be on point.”

What is one project you’re currently working on?

I have been painting my walls in my room. Eventually I want to take my bed out, & ill just sleep on the floor so that I can turn my bedroom into an art gallery.

Why did you start painting?

“I’ve always loved painting, and I needed to make money, so 2 years ago I put the two together and started painting for profit.”

Did you ever have a different paint style from the one you have now?

“No, I don’t know how to draw, that’s why I always hesitated at painting. And that’s when I started thinking ‘how could I make money, plus have something nice for people to look at?’ and so I did patterns. But the main thing about the patterns is the color pallet.”

Are you a fulltime artist?

“I am not unfortunately cause’ I just started painting, so I still need to find other ways to make money. But I have had jobs doing murals at Groundswell, a nonprofit mural organization, as well as working in art galleries in the city, and im currently working on a project in Brooklyn at a gallery called Superchief Gallery.”

Where does your inspiration come from?

“Colors. I’ve always admired paint and currently, since I skateboard, I decided I’m going to paint skateboards and sell them. I go to a skate shop and get drop-offs of used and broken skateboards to paint using my color pallet. I like the broken ones, it makes the product more unique”

You have an interesting color pallet, why did you choose the colors you did?

“I worked last summer at Groundswell and after we finished our last mural, they let us take the paint for free. So the colors I took are the colors I use in my patterns.”

What inspired you to do artistic modeling?

“Um, really just people telling me to, so I was like why not? And I ended up liking it.”

Do you design the outfits in your shoots?

“Yeah”

Personally, what is your goal?

"To paint and sell my art full time and to do more collaborations."

Professionally, what is your goal?

“My goal professionally is to paint and sell my art, so that I can gain money and make a living because I don’t want to work for money.”

What are your views on feminism?

“…Can I skip this one?”

Do you wish to live anywhere specific in the future?

“I want to go back to the Guyana, so I can help the Caribbean islands.”
